Great News From McDonald’s!

I want to take a portion of my blog here to thank McDonald’s for making my life easier. You know how much I love McDonald’s. And now McDo has made me fall in love with them all over again. How? I just found out today that they are no longer requiring a minimum P150 purchase for delivery.  No minimum at all! It’s important for me because as many of you know, I stay awake all night and I definitely need my McDonald’s in the early hours of the morning. Since I grew up on McDonald’s and they never seem to fail me.  Thanks guys.

The Salcedo Community Market

For five years now, the Salcedo Market has become a place where foodies unite, creative culinary juices overflow and food finds constantly discovered. Since it began in 2004, the Saturday market has attracted food lovers and market shoppers coming in from as far as Alabang, Antipolo and Quezon City. Organic produce, international specialties or even some  local hard-to-find ingredients are available here, with new stalls every few months joining in the fun. If you haven’t been back in a while,  your OverTime buddy found five reasons (in no particular order) to return to the Saturday market:

1. Dave’s Naturals Yogurt

Dave’s Naturals, the frozen yogurt cart in Salcedo Market, offers low fat, white-sugar-free fro-yo in a myriad of yogurt flavors. Dave, the owner and vendor, sells strawberry, pistachio and grape-flavored fro-yo, a rarity in all the other frozen yogurt shops that have mushroomed around Manila. We love his pistachio yogurt the best. Classic flavors are P65/cup (P220/pint and P825/ half gallon) and premium flavors are P75/cup ( P260/pint and P900/ half gallon).

Dave also hides away in a yogurt little shop in Mandaluyong called Onstott’s Yogurt Bar and Café, beside Uncle Moe’s and Slice and Dice near Barrio Kapitolyo in Pasig (the shop is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.).

2. Cantonese Home Kitchen’s Dimsum stall (MSG-Free)

Helen Ho of Cantonese Home Kitchen proudly says that her dimsum is MSG-free. Some of the dimsum at her stall are : Chiu Chow Dumplings (P75/ 3 pieces), Golden Eyes or Scallop Dumpling (P75/ 3 pieces) and Hong Kong Special Wanton (P75/ 3 pieces).  Ho’s dimsum can also be found at Metrowalk every Friday and Saturday night; at the Legaspi Village Park Market at 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and at the Ortigas Megatent from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3. Burritos and Quesadillas at Taqueria Mia

Authentic Mexican goodies like burritos, quesadillas and tacos are a big hit at Taqueria Mia. Estela Blanco, who is from Nayarit, Mexico but has lived in Manila for 15 years, serves her specialties like Barbacoa Burrito (P179) and Pollo Chipotle Quesadilla, great reasons for a  pitstop.

Their huge burrito contains tender pulled beef brisket marinated in a special sauce with Mexican chili and cooked with a blend of herbs. Flavorful Mexican rice, a spoonful of beans and sour cream are hugged by the soft tortilla. The Pollo Chipotle has a smoky flavor and is perfect when eaten with the salsa. Taqueria Mia also serves Totopos, a platter of tortilla chips, pico de gallo, refried beans, cheese and sour cream and the Mexican food requisite, soft tacos.

4. Turkish Pastries at Anatolia Cuisine

While other vendors waited in line to get stalls at the Salcedo Market, Anatolia Cuisine got in without waiting and edged out 700 others on the list.  Selling Turkish pastries and desserts, they used to share a space with a shawarma vendor but eventually got their own table and filled it with Baklava (P2,500 good for for 40 people, P1250 for half a tray and P250 for 12 pieces) and Borek-Spinach Quiche (P75). Anatolia Cuisine has joined the Baker’s Dozen Fair at the Powerplant Mall and can also be found at the Salcedo Market on Saturdays and at the Legazpi Market on Sundays.

5. Two Sisters

Chef Ed Quimson and culinary student Michele Santos revived their business partnership by opening a stall at the Salcedo Market early this year.  The dynamic partners, who worked together previously on a catering business, have sumptuous dishes which include Chef Ed’s Roast Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic (P750 for the whole chicken/ P400 for half order) , Iberian Lamb (P800 for 45 pieces) and Filo Cigars (P200/ order), which you dip in warm sauce.  The dishes are French-inspired, and has a homey feel which does not intimidate the market goers.
