Philippine football team ‘Azkals’ defeated Bangladesh ‘Bengal Tigers’ with a sweet victory 3-0 on Friday. The win has made the Philippine Team in the final 8 of the AFC Challenge Cup 2012.

According to ABS-CBN Sports, “Filipino-Spanish striker Angel Aldeguer Guirado was a revelation for the Azkals after scoring 2 goals in the second half of the game taking place at the Aung San Stadium.”

“Guirado’s first goal came early in the second half after heading in a shot from Ian Araneta. He followed this up by striking another goal in the in the 80th minute.”

The 2012 AFC Challenge Cup is the fourth edition of the tournament. The winners will qualify for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Maria Aragon singing with Lady Gaga

10-year old, Filipino-Canadian YouTube singing sensation, Maria Aragon, performed her version  of “Born This Way” with Lady Gaga at the Grammy winner’s Toronto concert last week.

Lady Gaga herself invited Aragon to perform the duet with her onstage about two weeks ago, after the Canada-based girl uploaded her stripped down version of  Lady Gaga’s hit song “Born This Way” over Youtube.

The Philippines now turned to be a must-see destination for many international travellers. According to the Deparment of Tourism (DOT) tourist arrivals rose 17% in January (that is equivalent to 349,713 from 298,119 of January 2010)

The country South Korea remained the top market for Philippines’s tourism as traffic grew 28% (or  92,249) and comprised 26% of the total volume.

Tourists and visitors from the United States reached 63,674, up 15% on year, and accounted for 18% of the total arrivals in January.

Meanwhile, Japan was third with 9% market share followed by China and Australia with 4.5% and 4%, respectively.

DOT reported that January’s tourist count translated into approximately $240 million worth of cash receipts as the Philippines has projected 3.7 million tourists this year.
